Diabetic foot infection (DFI) is one of the most challenging infections to treat as the successful achievement is very dependent to adequate surgical debridement (may not be feasible in all cases) and also the motivation of the patient for keeping the blood sugar level in control.

DFI is usually a deep soft tissue infection mostly involving the underlying bones as well. Due to severe skin sensation damage, patients usually present to hospital when it is almost late and bone involvement is established. Chronic infection of bone is not usually reversable by antibiotics and needs either radical debridement or even occasionally amputation.
